Intro: What is a Certificate of Appreciation?
When someone in your company or organization goes above and beyond their expected duties and does an exceptionally good job at whatever they do, it might be a great idea to hand them a certificate of appreciation. Not only do these simple documents thank them for a job well done, they can also give a true sense of accomplishment and encourage positive behavior in the future.
Tips for Creating a Certificate of Appreciation
The style of a certificate can be widely varied, but it usually has something to do with the company or group that is awarding it. While it is possible to purchase pre-made ones, creating your own with a unique flair or company-specific style will be more to the person receiving it. Consider these tips when creating one for someone you wish to thank and honor with an official document.
• Certificates like this are oriented horizontally
• Include a decorative border around the page
• Use a graphic that can be associated with the award type
• Consider a blue ribbon or gold seal decal
• Use a classic display font for the title
• Include specific information about why you are appreciating the recipient
• Add the date and location was rewarded
• Have the person in charge of the company or group sign the bottom
With all or some of these tips in use on the page, the person who is handed the certificate will surely feel like a winner.
How to Create a High-Quality Certificate of Appreciation
As mentioned above, certificates of thanks can be handed out for many different reasons. Two of the most common are created for an excellent job at work or do to access help at an event or volunteer outing.
At Work – Imagine that it is the busy season and orders are coming into the small jewelry company left and right. Perhaps you just had a show and things are busier than you have ever seen them. If an employee works through their lunch, stays late, and even comes in on the weekends to catch up on packaging and shipping, they may be worthy of an appreciation document and, perhaps, a bonus.
They work for other types of businesses too. A startup tech company rushing to finish a new program by a client deadline may run into all sorts of delays and troubles. The coder who takes his work home over the weekend and works out a difficult snag could likewise be awarded a certificate To show how much the company appreciates the extra effort.
For Events – Whether it is a volunteer cleanup day at the park or a high-priced fundraiser for disaster relief, if one person shines above the others in much they do or how much they give, a certificate may be warranted and encourage greater participation the next time.
Examples of Certificates of Appreciation
Although there are many reasons to give one of these certificates, the structure of them does not change very much. Each one would be created to be displayed on the paper in the horizontal position rather than the vertical position.
Elegant Certificate Style
This would begin with a heavily scrolled border of bunting, leaves and vines, or a more modern frame style. In many cases, this would be a color or even gold or silver.
Certificate of Appreciation (in highly-stylized font)
The name or title of the company or group who is giving out the certificate.
A blank line to write the recipient’s name or simply their name printed out.
In recognition for all you do (or) presented with appreciation for your hard work (or) to acknowledge your contribution (or) for services in support of XYZ
A blank line or the printed date
A blank line or the printed location
A blank line for the signature of the person in charge of the company or event
Along with the fancy border of the certificate, other graphics can be used on the page. These include company logos, group seals or icons, gold coins decals, or simply a graphic that has something to do with company or event.
Simple Certificate Style
This may have a simple colored border or no border at all. The fonts will undoubtedly be simpler without an old-fashioned feel. The page would still be oriented horizontally and may include appropriate images and colors.
Certificate of Appreciation
(or) Thank You for All You Do
(or) In Recognition for Your Contribution
A blank line for recipient’s name or their name printed directly on the paper
The name of the organization, company, or group that is presenting the certificate
What the certificate is being awarded for and the date
The signature of the person in charge
The wording on different certificates can change quite a bit depending on where it is coming from and what it is showing appreciation for. Of course, a $50,000 contribution to a political fund will get a very different type of reward than one awarded by the neighborhood preschool for helping to clean up their playground.
Here are two examples of certificates for those circumstances:
Certificate of Appreciation

Every line would be neatly centered and be presented in a professional or antique style font. The paper itself would be thick cardstock in ivory or white. The border could be blue printed bunting and the bottom right corner near the signature may have a gold seal from the political group.
Compare that with the award given to someone who helped clean up the urban preschool’s playground lot. This one would be printed on regular printer paper and use a brighter color scheme with some clip art of kindergarten motifs or smiling children.

Certificates Of appreciation come in many styles and forms. As long as they clearly convey the thanks appropriate for the actions taken by the recipient, they do their job admirably.
